Paraffin is a common name for a series of hydrocarbons that are obtained by fractional distillation from petroleum. These hydrocarbons may be solid or liquid, and are used in numerous applications and industries, including:

    • As a main ingredient in hot-melt adhesives (along with vinyl acetate).
    • In polishes and waxes
  • As a lubricant
    • In inks used in high-speed printing
    • To assist in the production of textiles
    • In coolants and cutting fluids in the metalworking and plastics (PVC) forming industries (chlorinated paraffins)
  • As an ingredient in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals
  • In the automotive industry
    • As an anti-ozone component in tires and other rubber products
    • As a component in tires tubes and innerliners
    • As a component in tire whitewalls
    • To manufacture weatherstripping
    • As an ingredient in the polymers used in automobile interior moldings
    • As a component in under-hood parts, e.g., radiator hoses, belts
  • In the manufacture of items that come into contact with food
    • Defoaming agents used in foaming
    • Defoaming agents for manufacturing paper and paperboard
    • Bonded resin filters
    • Textile and textile fibers
    • Surface lubricants used in the rolling of metallic foil and sheet stock
    • To protect cheese, and to coat fruit and vegetables for retail sales
    • To coat corrugated boxes, to coat paper cups, and to create waxed paper
